Continuation of CHM 113. Equilibrium theory, thermodynamics, kinetics, electrochemistry, nuclear chemistry, descriptive chemistry.

Thermodynamics, equilibrium, states of matter, solutions and chemical kinetics with a focus on biological systems. For students in biochemical, premedical, biomedical and educational curricula.

In-depth examination of protein structure and function, especially enzymes, combined with coverage of the major biochemical information pathways (DNA and RNA metabolism, protein synthesis and regulation of all of these).

Exploration of the major metabolic pathways (glycolysis, citric acid cycle, respiration, photosynthesis, along with synthesis and breakdown of carbohydrates, lipids and amino acids) and signal transduction pathways (hormone signaling, nervous system and sensory signaling).

Principles of physical chemistry as applied to biological systems.

Quantitative analysis, separation and purification of biological molecules. Applies chemical and physical methods to the characterization of biological macromolecules.

Chemistry of organic compounds.

Microscale organic chemical experiments in separation techniques, synthesis, analysis and identification, and relative reactivity.
